LARRY PEARSON AS THE LEGENDARY JIMMY BUFFETT

Summer has officially arrived in Florida, bringing with it the perfect excuse for flip-flops paired with every outfit, fruity drinks, and using the barbecue to cook absolutely everything. So, what better way to embrace the tropical vibes than with Bluffett and the Son of a Sailor Band? This incredible tribute to the late great Jimmy Buffett is set to play for one night only at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the Athens Theatre in DeLand.

When the sidewalk sizzles, it’s time to crank up the Jimmy Buffett tunes! Buffett’s music, like an endless summer vacation, whisks you away to a tropical paradise, even if just for a few moments.

Born on Christmas Day in 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Jimmy Buffett’s journey to musical stardom took him from the Deep South to the laid-back life of Key West, where he crafted his iconic “drunken-sailor” persona. His 1977 breakthrough album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, featuring the hit “Margaritaville,” became — and remains — a summer anthem for all generations.

Buffett’s influence went well beyond music; he built upon his iconic hits to craft an entire Margaritaville empire that includes restaurants, merchandise, hotels, cruise ships, and even planned residential communities. Sadly, the world lost this legendary artist in September 2023, but his music and spirit live on in the hearts of beach lovers, tiki bars and boat decks everywhere.

Bluffett and the Son of a Sailor Band are here to keep that spirit alive, offering a musical escape that will make you feel like you’re on a much-needed tropical getaway. Expect to hear classics like “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Come Monday” and “A Pirate Looks at Forty.”

Whether you’re a dedicated Parrot Head or just looking to kick back and cool off, this concert is a fantastic way to honor Buffett’s legacy and soak up the laid-back vibes he was famous for.

So, grab your most brightly colored shirt, and get ready for a night of fun.

Switching gears, mark your calendars for a very sweet adventure as Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka KIDS takes center stage for two exclusive performances: at 7 p.m. Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22. This delightful production features words and music by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy A. McDonald, based on Dahl’s beloved book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

HERE ARE THE ATYA KIDS IN LAST YEAR’S SUMMER CAMP PRODUCTION OF ANNIE KIDS.

Willy Wonka KIDS follows the mysterious candy-maker Willy Wonka as he hides golden tickets in five of his delectable candy bars. The lucky finders of these tickets are granted a once-in-a-lifetime tour of the Wonka factory and a lifetime supply of candy. However, there’s a catch — the winners must adhere to Mr. Wonka’s rules inside the factory or face the consequences.

Featuring songs from the 1971 film, this musical guarantees a whimsical experience sure to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.

For the second year, the Athens Theatre Youth Academy is producing a full-fledged play by elementary-school students, complete with costumes, sets and lighting. Students auditioned on the first day of camp and dived into an intensive two-week rehearsal process, with just 14 days before they hit the stage.

Directed by Samantha Rodriguez and musically directed by Marisol LaBoy, with assistant directors Collette Martin and Grace Holland, the production ensures a captivating experience full of pure imagination (see what we did there?). Willy Wonka KIDS is an opportunity to support and celebrate the hard work and talent of young performers in our community.

Summer is here; come and enjoy it at the Athens Theatre!

The Athens Theatre is at 124 N. Florida Ave. in Downtown DeLand.
