People attending the meetings of the Deltona City Commission no longer must submit to security searches of their personal items, including handbags.

Deltona’s new city manager, Dale Dougherty, ordered an end to the practice shortly after he began working as the city’s chief administrative officer.

For the past five years, Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies have required those entering the meeting chambers at City Hall to empty their pockets into bins and allow their pocketbooks to be searched for weapons or other contraband, as they pass through portals designed to detect metal objects hidden on their persons.

The searches became a routine practice in the summer of 2019, following unspecified threats of trouble at City Commission meetings.
