Simply Elegant Mobile E-mail

Discovery

As I was wandering the aisles of the electronics department in the Orange City Target, I did my usual window shopping — looking at the latest video games which have been discounted to $20, examining the digital cameras and camcorders on display, seeing if there were any crazy discounts on SD cards, and checking the prices on cellular phones from prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile and AT&T Go phone. In the cellular phone section I found a device I had never seen before. Typically if there is a new, shiny, battery-powered thingy I’ve either read about it or seen advertising for it. I hadn’t seen anything quite like it. It was like a larger version of the third-generation iPod Nano with a keyboard instead of a dial. There was a red one, a cyan one and a black one. My interested was piqued which is appropriate as the device was labeled Peek. Read the rest of this entry »

In 1999, back in the day of Palm Pilots and PDAs (personal data assistants not public displays of affection,) I owned a wonderful piece of hardware manufactured by HP called the Jornada 820. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s the 411?

May 6th, 2009 by michael

411 can be really handy and costly. I remember getting aggravated by the 25¢ charges for landline telephone 411. Now a days you can be charged nearly $2 or more for a call to 411. Here are some alternatives that won’t put a squeeze on your wallet. Read the rest of this entry »

Software I Use at Home

April 17th, 2009 by michael

I apologize for taking longer than usual to post. I’ve been up to my ears in some freelance design work. It’s occupied much of my time and made me truly appreciate some of the great software that is available for free or for a reasonable price. Since I have yet to own an Apple Mac computer all of the following software runs on Windows although most are also available on Mac OS X and some for Linux. Read the rest of this entry »

Buying a Point-and-Shoot Camera? Part Three

March 25th, 2009 by michael

Part 3: All-in-One?

When wandering the aisles looking for a point-and-shoot camera, you may be tempted by the all-in-one media devices promising video recording, still image capture, audio recording, MP3 playback, video input recording and can connect to a TV for additional playback. Like a Swiss Army knife, an all-in-one device can do everything it promises, but like a Swiss Army knife using a one-purpose device produces better results. Really have you tried using the wood saw on a Swiss Army knife?

More Apple. Tiny, Bite-Sized and Talks!

March 11th, 2009 by michael

It’s deadline day and I just found out there is a new iPod Shuffle, Apple’s lower cost MP3 player. It has no screen, buuuuuuut it speaks the title and artist of the song playing and bears a striking resemblance to a tiny cigarette lighter. It has a 4GB capacity, or about 1000 songs and price tag of $79.00 USD.

Check it out for your self: www.apple.com/ipodshuffle

Circuit City Liquidation Follow Up

February 24th, 2009 by michael

My wife and I traveled to Daytona Beach this past weekend. I bet my wife I could actually go into Circuit City and be out in five minutes. To understand this challenge, you have to understand my wife knows that I take 150 to 200% longer to go shopping than she does. I tend not to ask store clerks where items or located. Where’s the adventure in that? I also love to browse and find what’s new and shiny. That’s just grocery shopping! Let me near an electronics store and, several hours later, the manager will let me know that the store has been closed for an hour and would I please just leave already! I won the bet, but just barely. Here’s the result of my five-minute trek. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Digital Television Day!

February 17th, 2009 by michael

Today, February 17, 2009, was the original digital television transition day. Television broadcasters were to cease broadcasting over-the-air television as analog signals and start broadcasting as digital signals. Thanks to Congress, stations have until June 12, 2009, to switch. When the switch happens, if you are using an antenna to receive your signal, you are not using a digital converter box AND your television was manufactured before March 1, 2007,  you will probably get only static or a screen with a phone number to call to answer the question “what’s wrong with my tv?” Read the rest of this entry »
