Find books, music and sunshine Saturday in Lake Helen

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Hey, all y’all crackers! Don’t forget to come out to Lake Helen tomorrow, for the Florida Authors Book Fair. It promises to be a great day to be out and about, and a great event. More than 20 Florida authors will talk Florida literature and history with you 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Hopkins Hall, at the corner of Euclid and Connecticut.

At 2 p.m., Herb Hiller will talk photography and his book Highway A1A: Florida on the Edge

“In case of Rapture, Can I Have Your Car?”

To make a good day a great day, our friend, singer-songwriter Rog Lee ,will be there in the afternoon. He’s a Florida poet who sets his poems of Florida to his own music. Among his awards are the 2008 Will McLean Best New Song award for his song “City of Jacksonville,” one of my favorites. In other songs, he pokes fun at developers and hoo-haws, or people who ride around with “Rapture” bumper stickers on their Cadillacs. Or the joys of Lake Monroe.

If you haven’t heard his music, check it out here at his Web site, roglee.com.

Then, come hear him play in person!

Or, “Kiss the Ocklawaha goodbye”

I just can’t resist this. It made me smile.

It came in an e-mail dealing with very serious issues, however — the water shortage in Florida, the environment, and management of water sources.

At this point, it’s more perceived than actuality, but cities and county governments are looking down the road and seeing population growth, and at the same time, less water available from their wells, due to St. Johns River Water Management District restrictions beginning in 2013.
