John L. Mica and his wife, Patricia, have lived in Central Florida since they were married in 1972. They have two adult children.
Mica graduated from Miami-Dade Community College in 1965, and the University of Florida in 1967. He has been awarded honorary doctoral degrees from Bethune-Cookman University, Flagler College and Stetson University, as well as an honorary degree from Daytona Beach Community College.
He is a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity and Florida Blue Key.
Mica is the incumbent U.S. representative, and has served in that post since 1993.
He served in the Florida House of Representatives 1976-80, where he was on the Appropriations, Select Energy, Ethics and Elections, and Community Affairs committees. From 1981 to 1985 he served as chief of staff and administrative assistant to U.S. Sen. Paula Hawkins. He was chairman of the House Civil Service Subcommittee 1995-99, and was chairman of the subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources.
Before his election to joining the U.S House of Representatives, Mica established several business ventures in real-estate development, communications, international trade consulting and government affairs. He also served as executive director of local government study commissions for Palm Beach and Orange counties.
Mica's assignments include the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, where he is a senior member and former chairman of two of its subcommittees.
He is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Board of Visitors and the Kennedy Center board of trustees. He served six years as the speaker of the House's representative to the U.S. Capitol Preservation Commission and was formerly a member of the House Administration Committee.
Mica was chairman of the Subcommittee on Aviation 2001-06, and as the senior ranking Republican on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committees served on all six Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittees.

There is as much opportunity for a person to become a homeowner as there was five years ago.
3 — Comment: While more homes are available in the current market and nationally homeownership is at high levels, the sub-prime loan fiasco, giving mortgages to borrowers regardless of ability to pay, has made it more difficult to now obtain financing.
A nationalized health-care system should be available to all U.S. residents.
1 — Comment: Government should not take over healthcare but should work to reduce costs for all by enacting lawsuit reform, reducing defensive medicine costs and making affordable low-cost private plans available to all.
Congress should support, without qualification, the right of citizens to keep and bear arms.

The U.S. is safer than it was before 9/11.

Accomplishment of which you are most proud: Expanding services and benefits for our veterans including employment opportunities through the national Veterans Preference Act which I authored, broadening medical coverage for military families and dependents and assisting with bringing new and expanded facilities for Veterans including new nursing care facilities, clinics, the new Central Florida Veterans Hospital and a new Veterans cemetery.
Providing new and decent housing opportunities through replacement of dilapidated World War II public housing with new modern homes.
Shepherding transportation projects and the development of Central Florida’s Commuter Rail System.
