Vernon J. Burton, 59, lives in Lake Helen with his wife, Jerrylyn. They have four sons and five daughters.
Burton is an independent agent for PRIMERICA Financial Services. He retired as a New York City corrections officer, and was formerly a licensed contractor.
He attended public schools in Bluefield, W.Va., and Brooklyn. He graduated from New York City Correctional Academy, and majored in criminal justice at John Hay College of Criminal Justice and LaGuardia Community College.
Burton was the former chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board of Lake Helen, and currently serves on the Lake Helen planning board. He is a union representative to the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association and the Guardian Association.
Burton is a member of the African American Advisory Committee of Volusia County Schools, and served as a parent-teacher association president in New York.
Burton was a member of Rotary in Jamaica, N.Y., and belonged to Maranatha Baptist Church in Queens Village, N.Y., where he served as an ordained deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a Boy Scout leader.
He is a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Deltona, where he teaches Sunday school, directs the Hands of Hope Food Pantry, coaches the New Hope Striders Track Team, and is a member of the board of directors of New Hope Human Services.
Burton enjoys long-distance running, bowling and roller-skating.
