Florida Medical Association Endorses Dorothy Hukill for State Senate, District 8
State Representative Dorothy Hukill (R-Port Orange) was recently endorsed by the Florida Medical Association in her candidacy for State Senate, District 8.
“The Florida Medical Association (FMA) Political Action Committee Board of Directors voted to endorse Rep. Hukill’s candidacy for Senate District 8,” wrote Timothy Stapleton, Executive Vice President of FMA.
“It is a privilege to be recognized by the organization that represents 20,000 physicians throughout the State of Florida,” said Rep. Hukill. “I am a strong supporter of the medical community and look forward to working with them on their issues in the state senate.”
Founded in 1874, the Florida Medical Association is a professional association dedicated to the service and assistance of Doctors of Medicine and Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida. The FMA represents more than 20,000 physicians on issues of legislation and regulatory affairs.
About Dorothy Hukill
State Representative Dorothy Hukill is a small business owner and former public elementary school teacher. She previously served Central Florida as a City Councilwoman and as the Mayor of Port Orange from 2000-2004. In 2004, she was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in District 28 and has been re-elected subsequently. She is a graduate of St. John’s University School of Law. She is running for Florida State Senate, District 8, which encompasses a majority of Volusia County and parts of Marion and Lake Counties.
While serving as the Chairwoman for the House Economic Affairs Committee, she worked to balance the state’s budget without raising taxes. Despite a $1.8 billion budget shortfall this year, Rep. Hukill voted to increase K-12 education spending by over $1 billion while cutting wasteful spending because of her commitment to excellent educational opportunities for Florida’s children. Additionally, she voted for the largest property tax cut in state history and opposed hundreds of millions of dollars in fee increases for Florida families. Democratic National Committee and Obama for America “Gotta Vote” Bus Tour Comes to DeLand, Stuart and Rivera Beach, Florida Today
The DNC/OFA Month-Long “Gotta Vote” Bus Tour Rolls into Florida
Washington – With voters in states across the country already casting ballots in the 2012 election, the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America “Gotta Vote” Bus Tour will roll into DeLand at 9:30 AM ET TOMORROW. The bus will then stop in Stuart at 1:30 PM ET and Rivera Beach at 4:00 PM ET. The bus will remain in Florida through the end of the week.
Special guests for these stops include Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, and musician and actor Fonzworth Bentley.
With Vote Now!, Floridians can vote at their county Supervisor of Elections office by asking for an absentee ballot – most will let them fill it out and return it on the spot. While this is a time-tested means of voting, this is the first big push by any statewide campaign to widely use this process. Vote Now! continues to build on the momentum of registering hundreds of thousands of Florida voters. The stakes in this election are higher than ever before, so voters are taking advantage of opportunities to vote before November 6th, and finish what we started in 2008.
For more information on Vote Now! locations and committing to vote, voters can go to www.ofa.bo/flvotenow and www.gottavote.com.

Ride free to the polls with your voter I.D.
Getting to the polls this election will be a little easier for Volusia County voters. Votran and the Volusia County Elections Office are partnering to offer free rides to the polls Election Day for registered voters. Transportation to voting sites throughout the county for early voting Oct. 27 – Nov. 3, 2012, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and to the general election polls on Tuesday, Nov. 6 will be provided free to Votran riders who show a valid voter ID. Be sure to check the Votran schedule for arrival and departure times in your area.
“The Ride Free to the Polls with Your Voter ID program provides voters with a lack of personal transportation an equal opportunity to vote,” according to Ann McFall, Volusia County’s Supervisor of Elections. Residents with a voter’s registration card can ride Votran free to the polls for the primary and general elections.
“This service ensures that everyone has the same opportunity to vote, and we are pleased to be able to offer this service to Volusia County residents,” said Votran General Manager Steven Sherrer.
In addition to being offered to riders of Votran’s fixed routes, the Ride Free with Your Voter ID program is available to residents registered for Votran’s Gold Service. Gold Service users must schedule their trip a day in advance. Gold Service is available to persons who, because of physical or mental disability or age, are unable to transport themselves and cannot use fixed-route bus service, Sherrer explained.
“We are excited to partner with Votran again,” said McFall. “This program opens the voting process to many residents who have been unable to vote. This is a great example of County services working together.”

District 6 congressional candidates debate
District 6 congressional candidates Heather Beaven of Palm Coast, a Democrat, and Ron DeSantis of Ponte Vedra Beach, a Republican, will meet next week in a debate co-sponsored by Stetson University's Center for Community Engagement and The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
The debate will be 8-9 p.m. Wednesday at the DeLand High School Auditorium, 800 N. Hill Ave., and taped by WESH-Channel 2 for broadcast at a later time.
Congressional District 6 was created as a result of the redistricting that followed the 2010 Census. Its boundaries stretch from the northern end of St. Johns County to the southern end of Volusia County and include all of Flagler and most of Putnam counties. With no incumbent, the district has been targeted by both Democrats and Republicans.
"Because of Stetson University's commitment to engaging citizens and students in our community, we are excited to co-host this debate," said Kevin Winchell, assistant director of community engagement at Stetson University in DeLand. "The debate will be a great opportunity for voters to learn more about the candidates in order to make an informed decision during this very important election."
News-Journal Editor Pat Rice will moderate the debate.
"The News-Journal is pleased to be a part of this debate as part of our commitment to helping inform voters on issues that impact their lives," Rice said.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are requested to arrive by 7:30 p.m. so the debate can begin promptly at 8.

Primary Candidates Endorse Christopher Kelly for Volusia County Judge
Media Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 10, 2012
For more information contact David Lee Davis < David Lee Davis
Christopher Kelly, candidate for Volusia County Judge Group 4, today received the endorsements from the three candidates eliminated in the August primary. Deland Attorney Steve Burk, Assistant State Attorney Dustin Havens and Daytona Attorney Alan Holt cited Kelly's years of legal experience having worked both as a private attorney and a prosecutor with the state attorney's office.
" I have worked with both candidates in this race at the state attorney's office and Chris Kelly is by far a genuine leader who approaches the law with compassion and judicious restraint", said Dustin Havens. "Good judges know how to listen to facts and not take sides in a case but at the same time be responsive to the law which Chris Kelly has demonstrated time and time again."
Alan Holt extolled the importance of being "an involved individual "and stated" Chris Kelly has life experience from involvement in his community, his family values and his core ideals of justice which make him the better candidate in this race."
Long time attorney Steven Burk, the third candidate eliminated in the August 14th primary, said that judges need to be above reproach and "Christopher Kelly has adhered to the highest standards of ethical and judicial conduct in his campaign, and I enthusiastically endorse him in his race. During the campaign he has demonstrated to me the ability to think fast on his feet, to analyze a factual and legal scenario while under pressure, and to arrive at a thoughtful and wise conclusion in conformity with the law—precisely what I expect from the bench. I’ve practiced before hundreds of judges in my 30 years of trial experience across the state, and I am convinced that Chris has the level of maturity, life and professional experience essential to being an effective and fair jurist."
Each of the three former candidates continued with their endorsement of Christopher Kelly by stating that they will work diligently on his behalf to ensure that Volusia County continues its high standards of electing highly qualified jurists. ###

Candidate deLaroche investigation cited
Media release
For release August 5, 2012
Cites investigation and resignation of ex-judge Steven deLaroche
Diane Matousek ad cites integrity gap of ex-judge opponent
Volusia County, FL USA - “The Clerk of the Circuit Court handles sensitive data, critical public records and millions of dollars. It goes without saying that integrity is a pre-requisite for serving the public in this vital position.” So said Clerk of the Circuit Court Diane Matousek in response to a supporter who was commenting on her hard-hitting campaign ad that ran in today’s Daytona Beach News-Journal (attached). The ad informs voters of an investigation of her opponent, ex-judge Steven deLaroche in 2006, and his resignation as a judge in 2007.
“deLaroche often speaks of having fixed a single traffic ticket for his father-in-law while he (deLaroche) was a sitting judge and apologizes, dismissing the alleged breach of judicial conduct as a lapse in judgment,” said Matousek. “In reality, the charges against ex-judge deLaroche by the Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC) were extensive and extremely serious.” According to a Florida Supreme Court Document titled Amended Notice of Formal Charges addressed to Steven deLaroche, allegations for which the JQC cited probable cause include:
Vacating a conviction of James S.
Dismissing a civil traffic citation for Jennifer L.
Dismissing a civil traffic citation for his father-in-law
Dismissing another civil traffic citation for Jennifer L.
Dismissing a civil traffic violation for William A.
Demonstrating a pattern and practice of deliberate misconduct
Knowingly presenting a false/misleading affidavit about his own actions
Knowingly presenting a false/misleading affidavit about his own actions again
Knowingly presenting a false/misleading affidavit about his own actions yet again
Offering testimony reflecting a lack of candor in material respects
“My campaign has been supported by many attorneys and people involved in the judicial system as well as the government who know this race is about integrity. His campaign mostly is self-funded,” said Matousek. A review of financial reports of both campaigns validates that statement with Matousek having received contributions from 236 contributors, totaling $29,390. deLaroche having received contributions from 60 contributors totaling just $8,856. deLaroche also loaned his own campaign $61,000.

2012 Primary Election Information from the League of Women Voters of Florida
LWVF's BeReadyToVote.org Makes Democracy Easy!
Early voting for the Primary Election begins in most Florida counties this Saturday, August 4, 2012.
To ensure that citizens across Florida have access to the voting information they need to successfully participate in the elections process, the League of Women Voters of Florida has created www.BeReadyToVote.org. This site has been nationally-recognized as a invaluable resource for voters, and it is accessible in both English and Spanish (via www.VamosAVotar.org). The site is also available for smartphone users via the 2-D QR bar code located on the attached promotional posters.
The League reminds voters that there are three ways to cast a ballot in the Primary Election:
Vote by Mail -- available to all voters who request an absentee ballot from their local Supervisor of Elections Office before 5:00 PM on Wednesday, August 8, 2012
Vote Early -- at designated sites within your county
Vote on Election Day -- Tuesday, August 14, 2012
“The Primary Election ballot offers something for every voter," said Deirdre Macnab, President of the League of Women Voters of Florida. "Many of the races are nonpartisan, which means that voters' participation is not limited by their party affiliation. And there are a host of important issues that will be affected, including the quality of our schools, the economy, preservation of our beautiful beaches and rivers, and the health of our families. No eligible voter's voice should be silenced; your informed vote is needed!"
Note: The deadline to register for the Primary Election has passed, however, the League encourages new voters to get registered as soon as possible in order to be ready for the November 6, 2012 General Election. The book-closing deadline for that election is October 9, 2012.

Future House Speakers Endorse Fred Costello
Florida’s Leaders Line Up Behind Costello
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 2, 2012
CONTACT:
Dan Barrow 404-405-8145
Ormond Beach – Representative Fred Costello has announced the endorsement of Speaker-Designate Will Weatherford, Chairman Chris Dorworth, and Representative Richard Corcoran. The three have been selected by their peers to serve as Speaker of the House in their respective Senior terms. In the 2011 and 2012 Legislative Sessions, the Florida House cut spending by $6 Billion, leading Florida to an improved credit rating. The House also passed significant reforms to protect gun-owners, create a business-friendly environment, and modernize Florida’s education system.
“I am incredibly humbled to have the support of such an outstanding group based upon my leadership and service in the Florida House. The future Speakers have seen my dedication to my community, my State and my country. I look forward to continuing that commitment as a member of the United States Congress,” said Costello.
Speaker-Designate Weatherford – "Fred Costello is running for Congress on the promise to reform our nation. This election, we have a small window of time to turn our country back on the right course. We need more members of Congress who will stand strong in support of limited government and individual liberty."
Weatherford chaired the House’s Redistricting Committee, whose House maps were unanimously approved by the Supreme Court. He will be the Speaker during the 2013-2014 Legislative Sessions.
Chairman Dorworth - "While working with Fred Costello to prevent massive property tax increases, I saw first-hand his commitment to our Conservative ideals. He is a leader who will work to get things done, but will not compromise his values or principles. Washington DC could learn a few things from Fred Costello's work ethic and dedication."
Dorworth is the Sponsor of "Amendment 4" with Representative Costello being the "Prime Co-Sponsor." "Amendment 4" will cap Non-Homestead property tax increases at 5%, eliminate recapture and provide a super homestead exemption for home buyers who have not owned a home within the past three years. Dorworth is expected to be Speaker during the 2015-2016 Legislative Sessions.
Representative Corcoran – “Although Fred will be greatly missed, I have zero doubt that he is the conservative voice of reason that we desperately need in Congress. Fred has proven his dedication to Volusia and Flagler Counties and the State of Florida, and his service as a State Representative has uniquely prepared him for Congress.”
Corcoran was Marco Rubio’s Chief of Staff, and is expected to be Speaker during the 2017-2018 Legislative Sessions.
Costello is seeking the Republican nomination to Florida’s 6th Congressional District. The newly drawn district is comprised of most of Volusia County, all of Flagler and St. Johns counties, as well as a portion of Putnam County. Dr. Costello, a former Captain in the USAF, dentist, business owner and 35 year resident of Volusia County and District 6, is the former Mayor of Ormond Beach and currently serves as State Representative.
Paid for by Fred Costello for Congress Committee.

Democratic Club Meeting Thursday 7/26 7:15pm - Candidate Forum!
Hello friends,
Just a reminder about our regular monthly meeting tomorrow night (Thursday, July 26, 7:15pm). Note that our meeting will be in the usual location - the DeLand Police Department Community Room on West Howry Ave - because it provides more space for a meeting than our new HQ does.
We have a very special agenda for the evening. Candidates for the County Council Chair position, Carl Persis and Ted Doran, will be coming by to talk about their visions for Volusia County, which will be moderated by a non-affiliated member of our club's executive board. If you have questions that you would like to submit for the candidates, please give them to club President Jeff Shepherd prior to tomorrow evening's meeting (either via email at shepz@mpinet.net, or in person).
Note that Persis and Doran will be coming straight from Stetson University, which is hosting a public debate between the two beginning at 5:30pm. If you wish to attend that event as well, you can learn more by visiting this webpage: http://www.news-journalonline.com/news/politics/flagler-county/2012/07/22/news-journal-voter-forums-debates-begin-tuesday.html.
Thanks!

Democratic Headquarters
HELLO FELLOW DEMOCRATS AND FRIENDS:
I am just letting you know that our Democratic Headquarters located at 121 W. Wisconsin Avenue (the 2008 Obama Headquarters) is now open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We had our Grand Opening on Friday, July 20, and it was a huge success. Please drop in for a visit soon. We have tee shirts in all sizes for a suggested donation of $10.00, yard signs for $5.00, bumper stickers for $2.00, and button pins for $2.00, so come on down and stock up on campaign paraphernalia!
As we have done in past elections, we also have a campaign calendar on the walls. You can sponsor a day for a suggested donation of $50.00 per day to help offset the expenses of operating the Headquarters. We still have the rest of the month of JULY available as well as the months of AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, and the first week of NOVEMBER, so if you have a special day in your life that is coming up or a loved one you want to remember, come in and pick a day or more to sponsor in honor of that day or person. Alternatively, you may send your request with a check made out to the Democratic Club of Northwest Volusia County to P. O. Box 602, DeLand, FL 32721. You may also visit our website at www.nwvdemocrat.org and make a contribution through Pay Pal.
Our Headquarters telephone number is (386) 738-2523. Feel free to call us if you have any questions concerning the election. We are still looking for volunteers to help out at the Headquarters, so if you can spare a few hours a week to help re-elect our President and put other Democratic candidates in office, please let us know. We need you!
Sincerely,
Karen F. Zimmer
Vice-President
