This past year, 53 Volusia County schools earned Five Star status, the highest award for exemplary community involvement bestowed by the Florida Department of Education. To qualify for the award, a school must achieve and document 100 percent of 29 criteria in the categories of business partnership, family involvement, volunteers, student community service and school advisory councils. Schools on the west side of the county earning this honor were Blue Lake Elementary in DeLand, DeBary Elementary, Deltona Lakes Elementary, Deltona Middle, Discovery Elementary in Deltona, Enterprise Elementary, Forest Lake Elementary in Deltona, Freedom Elementary in DeLand, Friendship Elementary in Deltona, Galaxy Middle in Deltona, Heritage Middle in Deltona, Manatee Cove Elementary in Orange City, Orange City Elementary, Osteen Elementary, Southwestern Middle in DeLand, Spirit Elementary in Deltona, Starke Elementary in DeLand, Sunrise Elementary in Deltona, Timbercrest Elementary in Deltona, Volusia Pines Elementary in Lake Helen and Woodward Avenue Elementary in DeLand.
The John H. Smiley Educational Development Center is slated to close its doors in December. Most staff members who worked at the center will be moved to the Volusia County Schools Administrative Complex in DeLand, the school district's maintenance office on Olsen Drive in Daytona Beach, Atlantic High School in Port Orange, or Holly Hill Middle School.
The Stetson University basketball programs have created a Hatter Birthday Party, in which 10 children will attend a Hatter basketball game, for a cost of $150 each. During the party, the birthday child can sit on the bench with the team, take part in on-court game promotions, have the stadium sing "Happy Birthday to You," appear on the online broadcast of Gohatters.com, and receive a souvenir from the entire team. The child will get reserved seating, a visit to the stadium locker room prior to the game, a special announcement, a choice of menu, a birthday cake, room decorations, and a limited-edition birthday hat. The following students received honors at the DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts: James Andres and Andrea Tovar, Enterprise Elementary; Billie Laird, DeLand High; Venesha Noriega and Holly Pugh, Taylor High in Pierson; Shelby Dula, Celeste Villa and Tyler Huntoon, George Marks Elementary in DeLand; Jayson LaFortune, Southwestern Middle in DeLand; Christian Bernard, Pine Ridge High in Deltona; Rebecca Ashton, Woodward Avenue Elementary in DeLand; Caitlyn Best, Deltona Middle; Dalton Davis, Freedom Elementary in DeLand; Matthew Sindle, West Volusia Home-schoolers; and Jennifer Cancel, Deltona High.
Starke Elementary School
The After-School Program at Starke Elementary School in DeLand is having a Christmas Performance at 6:30 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 11.
There will be a field-study trip for science to the Rose Bay area on Monday, Dec. 15, and the Science Fair will take place Wednesday, Dec. 17.
The Kindergarten and First-Grade Holiday Performance will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, in the cafeteria.
Timbercrest Elementary School
Timbercrest Elementary School in Deltona will have its Winterfest 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Games cost 25 cents, ride bracelets are available for $5, and hot dogs, pizza, cotton candy, popcorn and ice cream will be sold. There will also be a gently used book sale, a silent auction, Santa's Secret Shop, and pictures with Santa.
Southwestern Middle School
The Winter Chorus Concert at Southwestern Middle School in DeLand will be at 6:30 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 11, in the auditorium.
The ESE Holiday Craft Show will be 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, through Wednesday, Dec. 17, in Building 1, Room 1.
The Winter Band Concert will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, in the auditorium.
The 4-H Tigers of Southwestern had a great run at the Volusia County Fair and Youth Show. Those winning honors were Brianna Johnson, Michael O'Quinn, Megan Carlisle, Everett Merrill, Zach Woide, Miranda Savercool, Kane Perryman, Carlos Salgado, Jamie Minnis, Rachel Lester, Ana Medrano, Tori Trickey and Emily Robidoux. This group is sponsored by Lori Smith, Southwestern's Teacher of the Year.
The latest seventh-grade Team Players of the Month are Marisha Mars, Hanna Collaro, Kaylee Sapp, Christopher Paniagua and Colin Taylor.
The most recent eighth-grade Students of the Month are Danielle Taylor, Joshua Peters, Michael Evans and David Lamondie.
