Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology opens Comprehensive Cancer Center
posted Nov 23, 2010 - 11:28:47am
When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, an endless stream of questions and concerns begins. At a time like this, a patient and their family need to find a place where they are comfortable, respected and able to receive the best care physically, mentally and emotionally. Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology has achieved all this and more with the opening of their new comprehensive cancer center in Orange City.
Established in 1980, Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology now includes six medical oncologists and has two other offices in Sanford and DeLand. The new center, housed in more than 22,500 square feet of beautifully decorated, comfortable space, offers Radiation, PET/CT Imaging and chemotherapy all under one roof providing the ultimate convenience for patients.
Patients often have to travel from place to place to receive various methods of their treatment. At Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology, patients never need to worry about getting directions to other facilities or being cared for by different people at each appointment. Patients at the new Orange City center will see the same physician, nurses and staff at each visit, establishing relationships that may not be found in other facilities.
“The people here have become like my family,” says Anna Perez of Deltona, a patient for the last 15 years. “The new center is just beautiful, so bright and upbeat. It makes me feel good to be here.”
Physicians notice the difference the comprehensive aspect brings as well. “With all treatments in the same building, it becomes easier to streamline the flow of treatment,” explains Dr. Gregory Ortega, a medical oncologist at the center. “Treatment planning can be done much faster when the whole care-giving team is at the same location.”
As far as treatment is concerned, the technology provided at Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology is unprecedented in this area. In fact, there are no other installed PET/CT machines in West Volusia County. Typically, a mobile scanner comes one day a week with older machines to provide treatment. Obviously, this compromises the comfort and flexibility of scheduling for patients.
For Radiation therapy, a new state-of-the-art machine, a Varian’s Trilogy Accelerator, was installed. “This machine provides treatment based on the ultra-precise 4D imaging of our PET/CT machine resulting in a faster, safer and less toxic procedure for our patients,” says Dr. Neeraj Sharma, a medical oncologist who has been with the practice for 10 years.
With all treatments done on site in an intimate, comfortable setting that’sclose to home, Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology can provide patients and their families with what they need most during treatment – peace of mind.
Thrilled to have added the new center in the bustling West Volusia community, Mid Florida Hematology & Oncology plans to continue working toward the same goal they’ve had for 30 years. Not only caring for cancer, but caring for your life.
