UPDATE MONDAY, DEC. 20 — In response to our readers' concerns about breast health for women older than 49, Good Samaritan Clinic Administrator Mary Gusky said if a West Volusia woman doesn't have any kind of insurance, call Good Samaritan. She may qualify for a mammogram and other health benefits through the clinic's regular program. So should any West Volusia adult man or woman who has no insurance and not much income contact the clinic to determine eligibility.
PREVIOUSLY REPORTED — Good Samaritan Health Clinic in DeLand is now able to offer free mammograms to West Volusia women ages 40-49 who could not otherwise afford them.
The service comes courtesy of a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
In 2010, women in the United States have a one-in-eight, or about 12 percent, lifetime risk of getting breast cancer, according to the foundation's statistics.
Breast-cancer rates are low for women under the age of 40, and begin to increase after the age of 40. Screening is important for women in their 40s.
Good Samaritan Health Clinic opened at 312 W. New York Ave. in DeLand in 2007, with a cadre of volunteers dedicated to providing routine health care to people without insurance and without the means to acquire it. Last year, Good Samaritan Dental Clinic opened in Orange City.
Good Samaritan nurse practitioner Cathy Puhr said women interested in getting a mammogram should call the clinic at 386-738-6990 and leave their names and phone numbers. They will be contacted to schedule an appointment.
