In voting for local offices, select neither a single party nor a single issue. Many have said, and I agree, not to vote strictly a party ticket. There are good and not-so-good candidates in each party.
However, some voters likewise vote only on single issues. It does not matter to them that most candidates might have deep-seated moral beliefs, as well. There are possibly other reasons or family upbringing that causes them to join a specific party.
What really frustrates me is that some would vote against a candidate whose party supports certain national-platform issues that will never come before the particular local office.
So, yes, it is OK and even good to espouse one's convictions on issues, but don't let that cloud your support of local candidates whose party may not pass a single-issue litmus test.
Instead, vote for folks who have already shown their active support for our community with hands-on support of needs they see within our community, both business needs and quality-of-life concerns.
Although admittedly biased in this area, I have seen my endorsed candidates do just that: actively strive to assist individuals with needs as well as to assist our community at large.
So, I do strongly endorse Andy Kelly for supervisor of elections and Missy Kelly for Volusia County Council District 1.
Andy Kelly and Missy Kelly have both proved themselves through their actions, as well as through their unfailing public service through the years.
Editor's note: The author is Andy Kelly's brother, and Missy Kelly's brother in law.
