Pierson has a new government office open one day a week.
The Volusia County Health Department and Family Health Source Medical Centers in Pierson have partnered to offer Northwest Volusia residents help through a new Women, Infants and Children (WIC) office.
Office staff saw the first clients Oct. 3. The WIC office, at 216 N. Frederick St., inside the Family Health Source Medical Centers office, is open noon-4 p.m. Wednesdays.
The Health Department's WIC program provide financial help for the purchase of nutritious foods, nutrition education (including breast-feeding promotion and support), and referrals to health and other social services at no charge. WIC serves low-income women who are pregnant or recently had babies, women who are breast-feeding, and infants and children up to age 5 who are at risk for poor nutrition.
The Family Health Source office also provides primary health-care and treatment for illnesses, along with physicals, immunizations and referrals to specialists.
