The Volusia County Council’s first hearing on land-use changes that will allow more dense development around the DeLand SunRail station has been postponed.

The item was on the agenda for the Feb. 28 meeting, but County Chair Jason Davis asked for a postponement. He was looking at some possibilities of additional funding, he said.

The first phase of the commuter-rail system, including the DeBary station, is already under way. Track and station improvements to the DeLand Amtrak station west of DeLand on Old New York Avenue are scheduled to begin next year.

A 323-acre area of transit-oriented development will be set up around DeLand’s station, east of the CSX rail line and south of State Road 44.

Service between Poinciana and DeLand, including several stops in Orlando, should be complete in 2016, Florida Department of Transportation District 5 spokesman Steve Olson said.

It still seems like they ought to run that last 3.5 miles into town. You'd have the perfect city-like development already there in that there is a city already developed around that line.
