Su cagers play in General Slade Brick tourneys

The Stetson Hatter women's and men's basketball teams closed out their regular seasons Saturday, March 2, with Senior Day, and learned their pairings for the 2013 General Slade Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournaments on Wednesday, March 6, in the Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga., with Mercer University the host.
The Hatter women won their finale with a 74-60 decision over Mercer to ensure their No. 2 seed, with a 14-4 ASC mark and a 21-8 overall mark. Sasha Sims poured in a career-high 27 points to pace SU, while Shanasa Sanders added 18. Victoria McGowan recorded her 13th career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jama Sharp chipped in with a career-high 13 rebounds.
Wednesday, March 6, top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast will play No. 8 Kennesaw State at noon, with the Hats taking the court at 6 p.m. paired with No. 7 East Tennessee State.
Thursday, March 7, it will be No. 6 Jacksonville vs. No. 3 Mercer at noon, while No. 5 North Florida takes on No. 4 South Carolina Upstate at 6 p.m.
The semifinals are set for noon and 6 p.m. Friday, March 8, with the championship on the line at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
Things were somewhat different for the Hatter men here Saturday, March 2, as the Mercer Bears used a 10-point second-half scoring advantage to score a 77-65 victory and secure their No. 1 spot in the ASC.
In the loss, Joel Naburgs led the Hats with 14 points, with Adam Pegg and Aaron Graham each with 12. Willie Green had six rebounds. All five Mercer starters were in double figures, with Travis Smith showing the way with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The men's tournament games are staggered with those of the women. At 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, it will be No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast vs. No. 7 North Florida, while at 8:30 p.m., No. 1 Mercer takes on No. 8 Lipscomb.
Thursday, March 7, it will be No. 3 Stetson (11-7 ASC and 14-15 overall) meeting No. 6 East Tennessee State at 2:30 p.m., while No. 5 South Carolina Upstate plays No. 4 Jacksonville at 8:30 p.m.
The semifinals are ticketed for 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, with the championship at noon Saturday, March 9.
