The Easter weekend three-game series for the Stetson Hatters on Melching Field at Conrad Park started disappointingly as the visiting Kennesaw State Owls posted a 4-0 Atlantic Sun Conference victory.
The series will resume at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 29, with the finale at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30.
Stetson will be meeting four opponents on the road before returning home Tuesday, April 16, hosting the University of South Florida Bulls. The road trips will include an early game at South Florida, three with the Jacksonville Dolphins, one at the University of Miami, and three with the University of South Carolina Upstate.
The shutout by the Owls was highlighted by right-hander Stephen Janas (3-0 with a 0.32 earned run average) and two relief pitchers. The starter has allowed just one earned run this year while walking only four and striking out 24 — he had one and three, respectively, against the Hatters.
The Hats managed only seven hits, with Garrett Russini showing the way with a double and pair of singles. Patrick Mazeika extended his hitting streak with a pair of one-baggers. Tyler Bocock and Mike Fernland also singled.
SU starter Josh Powers (1-3) once again didn't pitch badly, but his teammates have trouble getting him runs. He hurled six-and-a-third innings, allowing nine hits, two of four runs were earned, and there were a walk and three strikeouts. Garrison Banas, Joe Dye and Cameron Griffin toiled in relief.
