Lonnie N. Groot, of the Lake Mary law firm of Stenstrom, McIntosh, Colbert & Whigham, P.A. has participated as a judge in the current Florida High School Moot Court competition which is a program of the Florida Law Related Education Association, Inc. (FLREA). This two-part program offers a unique opportunity for high school students to learn about the appellate judicial process. Students write briefs and present oral arguments before an appellate judging panel using a fictitious constitutional case. (Case materials available at link below). The initial judging of the briefs filed by the students culminates with the final round being held at the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee with oral arguments presented at that time.
The FLREA is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 civic education organization. FLREA was established in 1984 to improve justice and expand education for democracy through the development and implementation of law related education programs for Florida youth.
The FLREA is dedicated to improving the administration of justice and strengthening democracy through practical, hands-on law related and civic education programs for students.
What distinguishes the FLREA is that it offers a grassroots, law-focused, nonpartisan approach and efforts targeted at the teachers and students of Florida. FLREA puts an emphasis on the rule of law, the American legal system, and the institutions and practices of democracy. Programs highlight civic content and methodologies to foster essential critical thinking skills, teaching students how to think, not what to think.
The FLREA received assistance in this project from the Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar to implement this Statewide initiative.
