DeLand Fire Department was dispatched to 830 N. Clake Ave at 3:09 a.m. today, Friday, April 5, due to a report of a residential structure fire. Upon arrival, the Fire Department encountered light smoke coming from the entrance to the apartment.
Responding fire crews quickly initiated a fire attack and performed a search of the apartment and the adjacent apartments. Firefighters determined that all occupants had exited the building prior to Fire Departments arrival. The fire was confined to a closet, and there was no fire extension.
The fire was extinguished with the no additional fire loss in the building and minor smoke damage was experienced throughout the apartment. No injuries were associated with this fire.
The fire was determined to be caused by a heating element from a water heater located in the closet. The Red Cross was notified to assist the occupants (one adult and two children).
