Phyllis Butlien of DeBary was presented with the 2013 Florida Outstanding School Volunteer Award from the Florida Department of Education by Pat Travis, facilitator of volunteer/partnership programs, Volusia County Schools.
The recognition was held April 9 in the presence of faculty, friends and family at University High School in Orange City.
Butlien is one of only five volunteers (adult category) throughout Florida to receive this honor from Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. The Florida Department of Education reported 651,394 school volunteers contributed more than 17 million hours of service in Florida schools during the 2011-12 school year.
Phyllis Butlien, a 13-year veteran volunteer nominated by University High School, received the school district’s Outstanding School Volunteer Award in the adult category this past February. She volunteers at five schools and averages 30 hours of service each week.
Through her leadership and knowledge base of the community’s resources, she helped to coordinate the parents and assist in the start-up activities when University High opened in 2010. Monies raised by the PTSA while president have been used to sponsor graduation activities and school events.
Butlien coordinated a “Texting & Driving…It Can Wait” campaign through AT&T, utilizing volunteer and partners to provide valuable information to students.
As a member of the Academy of Finance’s Advisory Council, she oversaw a partnership with DeBary Elementary to offer a finance/banking experience for the students. She assisted the high school students with set-up, audited the elementary students’ transactions, and helped balance the “student branch.”
Butlien mentors students at both River Springs Middle and Deltona Lakes Elementary schools. She also has been an active leader of many PTAs, is currently Volusia County Council’s PTA treasurer, and serves on the School Advisory Council.
