Talk in DeLand Sunday explores effect of prayer on health
Is God a 'healing principle'?

Is prayer really a reliable form of health care? Can God be relied on for health and healing?
"In my own experience, I've found that prayer and a deep understanding of God is a reliable way to maintain health and experience healing," international speaker Rob Gilbert said.
Gilbert, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served as a chaplain in Vietnam, will present a free talk titled “God and Health” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in the meeting room at DeLand City Hall, 120 S. Florida Ave.
"This lecture corrects misconceptions often held about God, and shows the nature of God, divine Love, to be a consistent healing Principle,” Gilbert said. “The ideas shared in this lecture will break down the long-held beliefs that assign the body to material theories of medicine, and the mind to religion, thus hiding the power of spiritual understanding to heal."
Gilbert said Mary Baker Eddy's early investigations into the relationship of mind and body, similar to investigations going on today, revealed the path that eventually led Eddy to the discovery of Christian Science and the practice of spiritual healing that "corrects misconceptions about God, secures health, and restores the body.”
Gilbert’s ideas are based on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and as discussed by Mary Baker Eddy in the textbook she wrote, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
Gilbert is a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science healing. He has a Master of Theology degree from Boston University School of Theology, where he majored in Biblical Studies. While serving as a chaplain in the United States Army, he had a variety of assignments, including military prisons and hospitals, in addition to his tour in Vietnam.
More recently, Gilbert co-produced two educational videos for medical nursing schools and hospitals, answering commonly asked questions about the practice of spiritual healing, how it informs health-care decisions, and the role of spirituality in nursing care.
He has spoken to a variety of medical audiences on the practice of spiritual healing. He has also spoken to college classes in women’s studies and alternative healing, to high-school classes on the subject of comparative religions, and in jails and prisons.
Gilbert is a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. He travels from his home in Upland, Calif.
His talk in DeLand is sponsored by First Church of Christ, Scientist, DeLand. For more information about the event or the DeLand church, call 386-734-5878 or 386-734-6547.
