With the Stetson football kickoff drawing nearer every day, DeLand leaders had to decide whether they were willing to spend $90,000 more than they had budgeted for the sound system and scoreboard at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium, where the Hatters will play.
At their April 15 meeting, City Manager Michael Pleus told members of the DeLand City Commission it was decision time. Earlier, commissioners postponed making decisions about which upgrades the city could afford, until the prices were firmed up.
"In October we knew we couldn't afford it," Pleus said. "If you want to have the scoreboard installed before the first game, you have to purchase it now."
Ultimately, commissioners decided to go with the full-price scoreboard at a cost of $455,740.
