Seventeen days after a shooting death on South Clara Avenue in DeLand, police said April 24 there's nothing new to report. No arrests have been made, and the investigation continues.
DeLand police found Jamel Simmons, 24, fatally shot on the street early April 7, after they got a report of a fight at 403 S. Clara Ave., known as the "Big House."
At least one other person was shot and another person was injured in the incident. Police have not released their names nor any other information about the shooting.
Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Estes said April 24 there's no additional information police can report due to the active investigation.
The house has been the subject of code-enforcement complaints. City officials claim owner Stedroy Maynard has been operating the house as a nightclub, without any licenses or permits, according to code-enforcement records.
On April 8, a judge granted the city a temporary injunction that limits the number of people Maynard can have at the house.
Maynard's attorney Robert Foster said Maynard isn't operating a business, but likes to have big parties.
