22nd annual Wild Game Feast aims to distribute $70,000 to local charities
More than 1,000 attend May 2 event; Jerry Frierson named “West Volusian of the Year”

More than 1,000 guests descended upon the Tommy Lawrence Arena of the Volusia County Fairgrounds last Thursday night for rattlesnake, venison chili, wild boar stew, camaraderie and fundraising during the DeLand Breakfast Rotary’s Wild Game Feast. Officials say an estimated $70,000 was raised from the event – funds that will be dispersed back into the community through local nonprofits and charitable causes.
At the event, third-generation DeLandite Jerry Frierson was honored as 2013 West Volusian of the Year. Frierson’s service is far-reaching in West Volusia, and includes 36 years as a Rotary member and past chair of the DeLand YMCA and West Volusia YMCA. He is a trustee, usher and 53-year member of Trinity United Methodist Church in DeLand, and over the years has been active on several City of DeLand volunteer citizen boards.
Frierson’s City involvement has included serving on its Tree Advisory Committee and leading the annual and much-beloved “tree giveaway” – a partnership between the city and DeLand Breakfast Rotary each spring. (In honor of his years of leadership with the nursery, it is now dubbed the Gerald E. Frierson Jr. City Nursery.) His other municipal appointments include the City’s economic development, code enforcement, and planning boards.
