School Board may ask voters to extend half-cent sales tax

The Volusia County sales tax will drop to 6 percent in 2017, unless residents vote to extend the half-cent tax for schools. The local sales-tax rate is currently 6.5 percent.
At a June 11 meeting, School Board members talked about whether to ask voters to continue the add-on tax for capital outlays.
"I think we need to start having that discussion," Board Member Candace Lankford said.
The idea of extending the tax emerged during a discussion of the school district's 2013-14 budget.
