Orange City shooting may have been justifiable homicide

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office responded to a mobile home near Orange City Tuesday night in response to a report of a shooting and found a 39-year-old man dead inside. The shooter, 68-year-old William Shope, was on scene and willingly spoke with investigators. No decision has been made yet on whether or not charges will be filed until all information and evidence can be reviewed and the results of the autopsy are available. At this time it appears William's shooting of his son, Adam Shope, may have been justified.
The Sheriff's Office was called out to 2500 N. Volusia Ave., Lot #36 at about 6:45 p.m. Deputies found Adam in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to his chest. Paramedics pronounced him dead on scene at about 7 p.m. William told investigators that Adam had obtained William's handgun and threatened to commit suicide. William got the gun away from Adam, but then Adam threatened William with a closed fist and aggressive stance. William said he was in fear for his life and fired one shot at his son. He then called for help.
Both men lived together. No one else was at the home and William was not injured during the incident.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Haught said that not much can be released until the deceased's next of kin is notified.
"We are attempting to notify the victim's next of kin," Haught said.
The next of kin is currently out of state on a camping trip, he added, which is delaying the notification regarding the man's death.
"What I can tell you is the victim and shooter knew one another; what I can tell you is that there has been no arrest, and it does not look like we will make an arrest," Haught said. "Preliminarily, and I'd like to emphasize that, preliminarily it looks like it may be a justified homicide."
The case, evidence and autopsy report — when available — will be further reviewed before a final determination can be made.
Haught said that, preliminarily, it appeared the victim was attacking the shooter.
More information will be available after the notifications.
