FloMet Vice President of Technology and Engineering Ashley Nichols, left, and FloMet Vice President of Manufacturing Tom Houck, center, accept the Grand Prize Award from Metal Powder Industries Federation President Matt Bulger in the Medical/Dental Category of the 2013 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards Competition in Chicago.
The award was given for a metal injection molded (MIM) stainless steel surgical jaw, used in a grasping device.
MIM is one of the powder metallurgy (PM) technologies, automated metalworking processes that form metal powders into precision components used in applications such as auto engines and transmissions, hardware, medical, dental, industrial machinery, sporting goods, defense, and firearms. More than 800 million pounds of PM parts are made annually in North America.
