Lawrence Craig, a 63-year-old Orange City man, was in the Volusia County Branch Jail July 24 charged with attempted first-degree murder. His alleged intended victim told deputies he has known Craig for about two years, and that Craig had become more aggressive and paranoid in that time.
The story unfolded when Volusia County deputies went to a residence on Greenwood Avenue just outside city limits at 10:02 p.m. July 19. They found a man inside the house, shot in the arm and neck by bullets that had been fired through a front window.
"The victim was bleeding heavily, but still walking and talking," Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Davidson said.
The victim told deputies he immediately suspected Craig, who lives a couple of blocks away, because of Craig's recent behavior.
"Deputies put Craig’s house under surveillance and took him into custody shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday morning as he was crawling under a fence in a neighbor’s yard. A Sheriff’s K-9 unit later located the shotgun believed to be used in the shooting in a nearby yard, partially buried under dirt and leaves," Davidson said.
According to the Sheriff's Office, later that night, at the hospital, the victim said Craig had threatened him by phone earlier in the week. Craig made threats to kill mutual friends, including one in DeLand with whom Craig was upset over a business transaction, the victim said.
The DeLand business owner reported the threats on July 18, and the next day, his yard was damaged by someone who drove through it, and a wooden sign in front of the business had been hit by an apparent shotgun blast.
Craig's son-in-law told Sheriff’s investigators Craig said he had a list of people he was planning to kill, and that the July 19 shooting victim was at the top of the list.
On July 19, the Orange City victim told deputies he heard what at first sounded like fireworks going off outside his house. While in his living room, the victim then heard another loud noise and immediately felt pain in his arm, shoulder and the side of his face.
The victim was treated at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and released July 20.
Craig was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and use of a weapon in the commission of a felony, and is being held without bond.
