SPECIAL TO THE BEACON
Classes for the 2013-14 school year are just around the corner, but word from the Florida High School Athletic Association in Gainesville has a reminder that today, Monday, Aug. 5, there will be a bevy of practice-openers for the various fall athletic teams.
Getting the green light will be boys' and girls' bowling, cross-country, golf, swimming and diving, boys' football (non-contact), and girls' volleyball.
Saturday, Aug. 10, will be the first day the football players don their full pads and have contact.
The various sports will be staging their preseason fall classics and their practices before their regular-season-openers.
Preseason football jamborees are always a big deal, and it looks like most will be scheduled for Friday, Aug 23, or Saturday, Aug. 24. Most of the schools will have their season-openers the following weekend.
