DeLand resident John Francis Roach was sentenced Aug. 16 to life in prison for the 2011 rape of an 11-year-old boy.
After deliberating for less than two hours, a jury convicted the 60-year-old Roach of one count of sexual battery on a person less than 12 years of age, a capital felony; and one count of lewd and lascivious molestation by a person 18 years of age or older on a person less than 12 years of age, a life felony.
The prosecutor was Assistant State Attorney James Disinger.
Circuit Judge Margaret Hudson sentenced Roach to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the sexual-battery charge, and to 30 years for the molestation charge, to be served concurrently.
Roach was also designated a sexual predator. In 1987, he was convicted of lewd assault on a child in Jacksonville, and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The State Attorney's Office reported that, in November 2011, Roach had gone into the 11-year-old's bedroom to watch TV. The child's mother went to check on her son, and noticed the door was closed. She opened the door and saw Roach sexually abusing the boy and reported the sexual battery.
