Beacon employee Brenda Cioe had run home briefly between meetings. Cioe, who lives in Sanford, noticed her power was out, her Internet wasn't working, and there was a line of cars going past her house.
A few blocks away, traffic was being rerouted, and a local Sanford bar, The Barn, had been evacuated because of a cellphone tower fire.
A Sanford police officer told Cioe that T-Mobile was working on the tower and it caught on fire. He said they were worried the tower might fall southwest onto the power lines.
No one was injured.
As of 12:35 p.m., cars were being rerouted from U.S. Highway 17-92 between 12th and 13th streets to Downtown Sanford.
T-Mobile has not yet responded to The Beacon's request for more information.
