Why we laugh
David McElroy and Marilyn Fermanich will present “Why We Laugh: Humor in Spirituality” at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, service at First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia in DeLand.
Do you ever think about why we laugh? Laughter is a joy, a release and a fulfillment of life’s wonders. McElroy and Fermanich will look at what makes us laugh, from jokes to the funny moments in our lives.
Consider this: It is show and tell at school, and all the children are requested to bring in an item that illustrates their religious beliefs. David stands up and says, “This is a Star of David, and I am a Jew.” Dorothy stands up and says, “This is a crucifix, and I am a Catholic.” Jimmy stands up and says, “This is a casserole, and I am a Unitarian.”
McElroy is a playwright, actor and director and a master clown! He has been a professional guest speaker at UU churches around Florida. Fermanich is a singer, actor and director. She has sung and given talks on “Great Unitarians and Humor” at UU churches.
Religious education for children of all ages is provided during the service. For more information about the church, visit www.uudeland.org or www.facebook.com/UUDeland, or call 386-734-6499. To learn more about Unitarian Universalism, visit www.uua.org.
