UPDATED 9:18 P.M. SATURDAY, AUG. 31 The Stetson Hatters were ahead 10-3 with 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter in tonight's game against the Warner University Royals. Then a lightning storm cleared the field around 7:40 p.m.
A National Weather Service advisory warned of a storm with lightning, strong winds and torrential rains approaching, and boy, it did.
The teams, the fans, Beacon reporter Joe Crews, WSBB radio personnel, fans and others tried to wait it out. Finally, around 9:05 p.m., the announcement came: The game was over for the night.
The game will resume at Spec Martin Stadium at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1.
UPDATED 5:30 P.M. SATURDAY, AUG. 31 — Hatter Village, set up outside Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand for pre-game activities and tailgating, is packed with people, DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nick Conte said. He and his crew are there for the festivities.
The Stetson Hatters will take on the Warner University Royals tonight at 7 p.m.

PREVIOUSLY REPORTED — The weather is mostly clear and sunny this afternoon, and the forecast looks good for StetsonUniversity's inaugural football game at 7 p.m. tonight, Saturday, Aug. 31.
At 2 p.m., the temperature was 90 degrees, Weather Underground reported, but it felt more like 98 degrees, so keep that bottle of water with you during Hatter Village activities. By 7 p.m. the temperature will have dropped a bit. The low tonight is forecast at 75 degrees.
As football fans eagerly await the Stetson Hatter game, here are last night's local high-school final scores:
