Friday night brought more than just the loss of a game for University (Orange City) High School: The Titans lost the game and three of their best players were ejected after a brawl broke out on the field.
The Lake Brantley Patriots made it known they meant business with two touchdowns in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Lake Brantley scored twice more, bringing the score to 18-0.
The Titans were losing steam until Jeremy Diaz took a pass from Chris Negron into the end zone. Lake Brantley kept their lead and brought the score to 24-6 in the third quarter, but they weren't stopping there. Two more touchdowns were to follow, making the score 38-6.
Halfway through the third quarter, tempers escalated, leading to a helmet-to-helmet brawl on the field. After coaches separated the teams and returned them to their respective sidelines, a slight game delay allowed referees to deliberate potential consequences. In the end, three Titan players (Michael Gray, Will Thomas and Alban Clark) were ejected from the game and given six-week suspensions from the field.
When the game resumed, the Patriots strengthened their lead to 45-6 and sent University home without a win.
"It was a very disappointing loss," said head coach Brian Kells.
