A DeLand man died Wednesday night, Nov. 6, after a semi truck pulled into the path of the motorcycle he was driving, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
John Gerald Varga Jr., 37, died on the scene of the crash, which happened at 9:35 p.m. The crash happened as he was traveling west on Old Daytona Road near the back of the Lowe's store, which faces U.S. Highway 17-92.
A semi truck with a trailer driven by Ervin Woodruff of Alabama was heading south on Newport Avenue. Woodruff told troopers he had stopped at the intersection of Newport Avenue and Old Daytona Road and looked both ways before entering the intersection and attempting to turn left. He didn't see Varga until the last second.
As a result, the front of Varga's motorcycle struck the left side of the truck's trailer. The motorcycle continued to travel underneath the trailer and emerged on the other side.
Varga died at the scene as a result of injuries sustained during the crash, the FHP report states.
The crash remains under investigation.
