High-school swimming is one of the hardest sports in which to qualify for the state championships. You must be in the top two in your regional, which is made up of three districts. There are three regions, which brings six swimmers automatically to the state meet.
The other 10, to make 16, earn the right to advance by being picked from all the swimmers in that event placed in order by time, with the top-10 times moving on to state. Therefore, none of the DeLand High nor University High swimmers advanced to the state meet.
The DeLand High girls placed 11th out of 20 schools with 66 points, while Orlando Olympia placed first with 422. The University (Orange City) Lady Titans placed 19th with 2 points.
For the male swimmers, Dr. Phillips placed first with 334.5 points, while DeLand was 15th with 40 and University was 19th with 18. There were 23 schools competing in the male competition. In each individual event, there were 24 swimmers in the regional meet at the I Drive YMCA in Orlando and 16 relay teams.
The top showing for the Lady Bulldogs was by Vicky Frederico, who placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.17. The boys’ squad had two swimmers in the top 10, Forest Froehlich in the 100 freestyle at 49.27 placing him seventh, and Jordan Youell placing eighth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.89.
The other Lady Bulldogs who gained points for DeLand were Megan Manning, Frederico, Cortney Miller and Kelsey Miller, by placing ninth in the 200 medley relay and 10th in the 200 free relay. The 400 free relay took 13th, while Amber Brown, Michelle Kunz, K. Miller and Lindsay Fox did the honors. Frederico placed 16th in the individual medley, C. Miller was 17th in the 100 butterfly, and Manning was 19th in the same event. Manning placed 20th in the 100 backstroke, while Brown was 23rd in the 500 freestyle.
The boys’ squad also found the following scoring points: Nick Menza, Youell, Froehlich and Chaz Cummings placing 12th in the 200 medley relay, while Froehlich, Youell, Cummings and Brendan Langford were 14th in the 200 free relay. Froehlich also earned 16th in the 100 butterfly.
For University, the Titan 200 medley relay was 13th, with Anthony Cole, Garrett Goodale, Benji Witkowski and Thomas Harrod doing the swimming. Goodale took 14th in the 100 breaststroke, with Ben Sava placing 16th in the 100 backstroke.
For the Lady Titans, the 200 free relay was 16th, with Ashley Goodale, Claire Bolt, Angelica Surdovel and Olivia Moro doing the event.
