Thanksgiving: A time to gather, a time to serve

Thanksgiving means family, and being with people you care about. In 2012, Shilretha Dixon, administrator of the Spring Hill Community Resource Center in DeLand, stopped counting the number of family members who came for Thanksgiving dinner.
More than 300 broke bread and spent time with each other.
"We like to give people a sense of belonging and self-worth," Dixon said. "We don't turn anyone away."
Some people, she said, came to the event hoping to help, and she put them to work.
"People know about the dinner, and they ask what can they do to help. I'd say wash your hands, glove up, and start serving!" Dixon said. "That lends to that sense of belonging, that feeling of a community family."
This year’s dinner will be 2-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Resource Center, 910 S. Adelle Ave.
The Bright House Networks Spring Hill Boys and Girls Club and Chisholm Community Center partner with the Resource Center to put on the dinner, providing chairs, entertainment and even fresh-grown food.
The after-school program at Chisholm Center, Dixon said, tends a community garden. The group provided cabbage they had grown for the 2012 meal. Then, the youngsters helped serve dessert.
Entertainment continues throughout the meal.
"It's a wonderful event," Dixon said.
