As the year celebrating the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's arrival on Florida's east coast sails to a close, members of the Northwest Volusia community named in his honor worked to put a finish to a parade float honoring the explorer.
The DeLeon Springs Community Association is making its first ever entry into the DeLand Jaycees Christmas Parade, and members didn't take the challenge lightly. They crafted a ship — a galleon — representing the one Ponce de Leon traveled in to reach the shores of Florida. It's complete with cannon apertures, a wheel, a masthead, and a sail. The boat was artfully painted by Community Association member Sandra Ford.
The Monday Men group, which meets at the DeLeon Springs Community Association every Monday morning, decides what projects they're interested in tackling — then goes for them. The Monday Men organized the cleanup at the association property — the Porter House at 5030 North U.S. Highway 17 North — last year, allowing two festivals to take place there.
Now, they have turned their eyes to the DeLand Jaycees Christmas Parade. Ponce de Leon will roll down Woodland Boulevard in style, accompanied by a cadre of Community Association members dressed in period pieces.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Look for Woodland Boulevard and most side streets to be closed before the float lineup begins at 11:30 a.m.
Minnesota, University and Pennsylvania avenues will serve as staging areas for the parade entries, which will roll south down the Boulevard to Euclid Avenue.
It will be the Jaycees' 65th annual Christmas parade in DeLand. This year's theme is "Christmas … Florida Style!"
There will be no judging stand at the parade. Judging will be done by the community, through online voting on the Beacon website, and The Beacon will post the results.
Parade spectators will choose the winning floats and other entries, by voting online. Voting will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, on The Beacon website, www.beacononlinenews.com, and will continue through 5 p.m. Monday.
Voters will be able to choose their favorite parade entries in each of six categories.
More parades coming up in West Volusia:
Also on Saturday, Dec. 7, the Deltona Christmas Parade will roll at 6 p.m., starting at Balsam Street near the post office, and will continue on Deltona Boulevard to Stratford Commons, just north of Deltona Plaza. This year's theme: “An Old-Fashioned Christmas.”
At 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, the DeBary Christmas Parade will begin at Spring Vista Drive and travel north on U.S. Highway 17-92 to Poinsettia Drive. This year's theme: “A River City Christmas.”
The Lake Helen Christmas Parade and the Orange City Christmas Parade are both set to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.
In Lake Helen, the line-up begins at the Wells Fargo Bank at the corner of Summit Avenue and Main Street through town.
In Orange City, the parade will run along U.S. Highway 17-92 from French Avenue to Ohio Avenue.
