DeLand commissioners were in high spirits Dec. 16 at the final meeting of the DeLand City Commission for 2013.
The agenda was crammed with good news, including the announcement that, earlier in the day, Downtown DeLand had won the Orlando Sentinel’s online “other” best-downtown poll.
Commissioners voted on five projects that could bring more than 600 new jobs to the community, ranging from housing options for senior citizens to a hotel and a state-of-the-art laboratory on the DeLand Municipal Airport.
"I guess you could say we're hot right now," Mayor Bob Apgar said. "It's going to be super if this all comes to fruition."
He recalled a quote from a coach from his childhood. "Luck is when preparation meets opportunity," Apgar said.
He said DeLand has benefited from its partnerships with a host of agencies and other municipalities, all working toward the common goal of a stronger Volusia County.
"There are an awful lot of exciting things for our community that translate into jobs and tax base," the mayor said.
He also praised members of the city staff for their behind-the-scenes work on economic development.
