A 69-year-old Deltona man was accidentally killed by a gunshot to his chest as he stood in his backyard on Christmas morning, authorities said.
Bruce Fleming was taken by ambulance to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, where he was pronounced dead, said Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gary Davidson.
An autopsy Thursday confirmed Fleming died from the gunshot, Davidson said. A person identified as the shooter — whose name was not released — admitted firing a shotgun, but told investigators he didn’t realize anyone had been hit.
The Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit, the Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the 7th Judicial Circuit’s Homicide Investigative Unit are working together on the case, Davidson said.
Items of forensic evidence collected during the investigation have been sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis, he added, and no decision about charges will be made until the results of the analysis are received.
Fleming lived on Cadehill Drive, in a relatively remote unincorporated neighborhood near Deltona’s northeast side. Initial witness statements indicated a neighbor had built a shooting range with a raised berm as a backstop, and that’s where the gunshot may have originated.
