The new year will bring some extra jingle to the pockets of County Manager Jim Dinneen and County Attorney Dan Eckert, along with other county employees.
During its last meeting of 2013, on Dec. 19, the Volusia County Council approved 3-percent pay raises for Dinneen and Eckert, the same percentage other county employees will receive.
The manager and attorney both report directly to the County Council. Other county employees report to the county manager.
County Attorney Dan Eckert, who's represented the county for 35 years, will be making $193,000 a year with the raise.
Dinneen's salary will come up to $220,000 a year; his total compensation is more than $300,000 a year, including retirement benefits and deferred compensation.
Dinneen has been county manager since 2006.
He got effusive praise from the County Council during his evaluation.
Vice Chair Joyce Cusack said Dinneen's job "has not been an easy one and I think he has handled this position with integrity."
Cusack said Dinneen has accomplished much, but repeated a criticism she also shared at his 2012 evaluation: She would like more diversity in the county workforce.
Council Member Doug Daniels said he wants to see Dinneen do more strategic planning, but said Dinneen has been a very capable manager.
County Council members also praised Eckert's years of service. County Chair Jason Davis said he's received emails sent by Eckert in the wee hours, as Eckert burned the midnight oil.
The council unanimously approved the pay raises.
