A Deltona man faces charges of attempted homicide and battery after a violent incident late Wednesday, Jan. 1, New Year's night.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported that a fight broke out during a party at the home of victim Carlos Farias around 11:30 p.m.
The Sheriff's Office reported that defendant Frank Holt, 31, became belligerent and refused to leave the party when asked. The result, according to the Sheriff's Office: Farias was taken by friends to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City with multiple stab wounds to his side and lower back. Hospital personnel notified the Sheriff's Office a stabbing victim had come in.
Deputies responded to the hospital and spoke with Farias, who told them the fight had happened at his house on Horizon Street in Deltona.
Deputies then went to the victim's home, spoke with witnesses, and learned that a group of friends had gathered there earlier in the evening and were drinking on the back porch. Defendant Holt, who was known to the group, arrived uninvited and started drinking with them, and Holt then became argumentative, Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Haught reported.
The guests wanted Holt to leave and were able to get him as far as the front yard. That's when a physical fight broke out between Holt and one of the guests, witnesses said. Farias tried to break up the struggle, but then Holt started fighting Farias, the guests said. Others were able to step in and break up the new fight.
Holt then got into his vehicle and left. When everyone else went back into the house, Farias discovered he was bleeding from multiple stab wounds. A couple of friends rushed Farias to the hospital and dropped him off.
Farias was later transferred to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach due to the severity of his injuries. Farias is in stable condition, Sheriff's Office spokesman Haught said.
Sheriff's deputies found defendant Holt a few hours after the incident and took him into custody after interviewing him. Holt was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges of attempted homicide and battery, with no bond.
