A.J. McFarland of DeLand, a 6-foot-4-inch 285-pound senior thrower from Father Lopez Catholic High School, was recently added to the roster of 300 athletes who have been invited to represent the state of Florida on Team USA in Australia this coming summer for the Down Under Games Track Meet.
With discus throws now eclipsing 160 feet and a progressing shot-put throw of 42-plus feet, McFarland is slated to attend the University of Florida this fall on an athletic scholarship. Carrying a 4.0 unweighted GPA into college, A.J. epitomizes the “student athlete.” In addition to being a multi-sport athlete across his four years at Lopez, he is also a contributing member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society, and the Ambassador Club.
Costs for A.J. to attend the Down Under international competition will be in excess of $5,000. He is seeking monetary donations to help him fulfill his dreams of representing Volusia County, the state of Florida, and the USA while competing this summer. To donate, visit www.downundersports.com, click on sponsor, and write in A.J. by name for Team Florida and Track and Field, or go to the Facebook page Team AJ for Florida in Australia.
