DHS boys' basketball claims district title
posted Feb 12, 2014 - 5:49:57pm
The DeLand High School Bulldog boys’ basketball team went 3-0 during district week by knocking off the top seed, Spruce Creek, who had stopped DeLand twice during the regular season. The Bulldogs claimed the district title 66-53 over the Hawks. This is the 10th district title that a team led by coach John Zeoli has claimed at DeLand.
Earlier in the week, DHS had stopped Lyman 61-40 and Lake Mary 45-43.
In the title game, DeLand led the entire game except for a short time in the third quarter. The Bulldogs came back from trailing at the end of the third period to bust the game open in the fourth with 29 points vs. 13 for Spruce Creek. DeLand was led by junior Jason Burnell with 33 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots. He was aided by Lynorris Hamilton’s 16 points and nine assists.
In the Lake Mary game, defense played a large part. However, in the fourth quarter, the Lake Mary Rams made a run at DeLand by outscoring them by 6, which ended up being just 2 points short of the tie. Burnell led the way for the Dogs with 16 points and six rebounds.
The Lyman game earlier in the week found DeLand winning by 21. Burnell had 17 points, nine rebounds, and eight blocked shots, while Jacoby Tucker added 16 points, with Hamilton getting 11 points and 10 assists.
DeLand returns to action at 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Bulldog gym, when they play host to Jacksonville First Coast, the runner-up team in District 8-1. Meanwhile, the Spruce Creek loss sends them to face Jacksonville Sandalwood at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 13. This means DeLand and Spruce Creek could face off once again if both are victorious in the next round of the state playoffs.
