The DeLand High School track team traveled to Bunnell last Friday to participate in the Hammock Hardware East Coast Classic Invitational Track Meet. There were more than 90 athletes registered in the meet, which saw a three-and-a-half-hour delay due to hazardous weather.
The DeLand boys picked up two wins, both coming from the efforts of senior Ken Pineiro. He claimed the 1600-meter run in 4:24.08, and then doubled up with another victory in the 3200 with a 9:24 clocking.
Other Bulldog boys scoring included Kevin Lora in the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet 6 inches. He was followed in the vault by teammate Josiah Schrade at 10 feet 9 inches. Billy Pangel placed fifth in the high jump while clearing the bar at 5 feet 6 inches. The Bulldog 4X100 relay was sixth at 45.42, while Tyler Havenner placed seventh in the shot put with a shove of 42 feet 3 inches.
The Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by two lady athletes. Michelle Wolff took third and fourth, respectively, in the 3200 and 1600. Her times were 12:10 and 5:33.15. Cherterickia Davis placed fourth and fifth in the discus and shot put with throws of 30 feet 6 inches and 88 feet 11 inches.
A DeLand resident who attends Father Lopez also claimed a title: A.J. McFarland won the discus with a 165-foot throw.
The DeLand squads play host to the annual Big “D” Relays at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1. This is an event where everything, including field events, is scored as relays. It is always exciting, with numerous unusual contested events taking place.
