Two women to run for DeLand City Commission
posted Mar 21, 2014 - 10:29:29am
Two women used a Spring Hill community meeting March 18 as a forum to announce their candidacy for DeLand City Commission.
Both women intend to run for Seat 3, currently held by Vonzelle Johnson. Johnson has not announced whether he will run for re-election, and did not respond to The Beacon's telephone inquiry by press time.
The newly announced candidates are Krystal Brown, who has become a community activist since her ex-husband, Marlon Brown, was killed in 2013 under the wheels of a DeLand police cruiser, and Jessica Davis, who works with troubled youth at the Chisholm Community Center in DeLand.
DeLand has three City Commission seats up for election Aug. 26: the mayor's Seat 1, and Seats 3 and 5.
Mayor Bob Apgar has announced he will run for re-election, and he faces a challenge from motor-sports dealer Pat Johnson. Leigh Matusick, currently in Seat 5, has filed to run for re-election and at this point has no challengers.
The deadline to file for candidacy is noon on Friday, June 20.
