UPDATED 10:30 A.M. THURSDAY, MAY 8 — Raymond Cruz was found safe and sound May 7 in the Orange City area.
PREVIOUSLY REPORTED — The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a 39-year-old Deltona man with a diminished mental capacity who hasn’t been seen since late Monday afternoon, May 5.
Family members reported Raymond Cruz missing to the Sheriff’s Office just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday. By that time, he had already been missing for a day.
Despite a mental disability which causes him to have the mental capacity of a teenager, family members said they don’t think Cruz is in any danger. They just want him home. They told deputies that he’s not on any medication and can function in everyday life situations. They also said that he likes to take long walks, but usually returns within 24 hours.
On Monday, Cruz left the house at approximately 5 p.m. and was last seen walking along Abagail Drive. He was wearing blue jeans, a black shirt with short, grey sleeves and black and white checkered sneakers.
Deputies mounted a search for Cruz Tuesday night and were continuing the search on Wednesday, both from the ground and by Sheriff’s Office helicopter. Local businesses, parks and walking trails are being checked and a recorded message is being sent to residents in the vicinity of where Cruz was last seen.
Cruz is 5’9” and weighs approximately 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees Cruz or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 386- 736-5999 or 911 if there’s an emergency.
