Bethel AME Church in DeLand, at 226 E. Howry Ave., will host a Job Fair Summit 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, May 23.
The event is being organized by the church's new pastor, the Rev. Jeffrey Dove, and staff at the church's Bethel Empowerment Center. The center is incorporated as a nonprofit organization that Dove began last month to provide services to the Bethel AME congregation and its DeLand neighbors.
Kathy Burley of Career Source of Flagler-Volusia is helping organize the fair, and volunteers from the community are assisting.
The job fair is intended to serve DeLand's diverse population with help finding local jobs, Dove said.
"In a world of job and economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever to come together as community leaders and organizations to show unity and sincere care for our families, friends and neighbors," Dove said. "Our target group will be employable ages and all ethnicities in the community."
The job fair will offer a one-stop opportunity for job-seekers, who should attend ready for interviews.
Dove anticipates 12-15 employers will be set up in the church social hall. Around 10 have already signed up. He's not yet sure how many job-seekers will attend, he said during a May 7 planning session, but he's expecting 50 or so.
Employers who are interested in interviewing at the job fair should call the church office at 386-855-4087 right away.
To register for the job fair or get more information, call 386-738-4474. Also, those planning to attend should register with www.careersourcecf.com to create and post a résumé and preapply for some jobs online.
The job fair is one of a number of community outreaches Bethel Empowerment Center is offering. The center staff also helps people register for food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare and other services, and obtain bus passes and the like.
Dove took over the reins of the church in 2013, replacing Pastor Willie Barnes, who left to take another assignment.
Dove earned his divinity degree at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. He served at New Bethel AME Church in Jasper, Georgia, before accepting the post in DeLand and relocating here. His wife, Althea, is an engineer at Covidien in DeLand.
Dove said he is committed to making a difference in his neighbors' lives.
