A 57-year-old man identified as Jorge Lewis Rivera of New Jersey was struck by a sport utility vehicle as he walked westbound across the 1000 block of North Woodland Boulevard in DeLand around 8:35 p.m. May 30.
Firefighters pronounced Rivera dead at the scene.
DeLand police Officer T.J. Petrella said Rivera may have been intoxicated. Witnesses told police they saw Rivera walk from the Sunoco gas station, on the east side of the Boulevard, partway across the Boulevard, where he stopped in the middle of the southbound lane and began drinking a beer.
"In doing so, the individual entered into the path of oncoming southbound traffic and was struck by a white Chevy Tahoe," Officer Petrella reported.
The stretch of roadway was poorly lighted, and there was no crosswalk in the vicinity, the police report noted.
No charges have been filed. The crash was turned over to traffic-homicide investigators.
