Lake Helen’s Unity in the Community celebrates one year
posted Jun 12, 2014 - 10:57:32am
In May 2013, Lake Helen Mayor Buddy Snowden led an initiative to bring together church members and city government representatives with the goal of improving the community. As a result, the Lake Helen Unity in the Community Committee was formed.
The committee established goals to break down barriers and promote positive relationships throughout the community.
During the first year, the committee met monthly, rotating the meeting location among the participating eight churches and City Hall. In October 2013, the committee held an event to “Honor Our Church Pioneers” as part of Lake Helen’s 125th Jubilee Celebration. In January 2014, a coat drive provided coats to those in need.
The one-year celebration of the founding of the committee was held June 4, and featured inspirational readings, as well as music by soloists and by the Lake Helen United Methodist Church Summer Choir. Also, lunch was served to a near-capacity crowd at Hopkins Hall.
Plans for the coming year include a back-to-school event for students Saturday, Aug. 2, at Hopkins Hall. The event will assist students with school supplies, haircuts and health checkups. Donation boxes will be placed at City Hall, the Lake Helen Public Library, and other locations in the city.
For more information, call Johnnie Chavis, Lake Helen event coordinator, at 386-747-2814.
