Retired Lt. Col. Eli I. Fishpaw

DELAND - Retired Lt. Col. Eli I. Fishpaw, 89, died March 13, 2010. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave. in DeLand. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand. Burial will be May 18 at Arlington National Cemetery in northern Virginia.
Mr. Fishpaw was born May 8, 1920, in Baltimore, and grew up there. In September 1938, he joined the 110th Field Artillery of the 29th National Guard Division. The division went on active duty early in 1941. He became a sergeant and was sent to Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Okla.
He was assigned in November 1942 as a second lieutenant to the 374th Field Artillery Unit in the newly organized 100th Infantry Division, activated at Fort Jackson, S.C., and stayed with that unit throughout combat with the 7th Army in southern France and western Germany, attaining the rank of captain and receiving the Bronze Star.
While at Fort Jackson, Mr. Fishpaw met his wife, Bernice, an Army nurse, and they were married while he was on maneuvers in Tennessee and she was stationed at Camp Forrest, Tenn.
Following World War II, he served at Fort Bragg, N.C., Camp Campbell, Ky., and the induction center in Cleveland. During the Berlin Airlift in 1948, he returned to active duty and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in West Germany.
During his military career, Mr. Fishpaw served at Fort Benning, Ga.; in Korea as an adviser to the 9th ROK Division; and in Meridian, Miss., as an adviser to the Reserve. In 1959, he returned to Germany to serve as commanding officer of the 4th of the 18th Field Artillery, and as the 212th Artillery Group executive officer.
After retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1962, he and his family moved to DeLand, where he became a real-estate broker. He was president of the DeLand and West Volusia Board of Realtors in 1968, and was chosen Realtor of the Year in 1969.
For more than 20 years, Mr. Fishpaw and his wife organized and successfully managed an annual reunion of the Florida Chapter of the 100th Infantry Division of World War II at the Holiday Inn in DeLand.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bernice; two daughters, Virginia Comella and her husband, Joe, of DeLand, and Mary Fishpaw of Whitefish, Mont.; and one son, Billy Eli Fishpaw and his wife, Kathy Fox, of Lexington, Va. Other survivors include three grandchildren, David Comella of St. Robert, Mo., Terrence Comella of Las Vegas, and Heidi Fishpaw of Silver Spring, Md.; and one sister, June Fishpaw of Baltimore.

Neuman Glenn McVey

DELAND - Neuman Glenn McVey, 78, died March 13, 2010, peacefully at his home.
Born Nov. 5, 1931, in Miami, Mr. McVey moved to this area in 1983 from Manhattan, N.Y.
He graduated from Parson School of Design in New York and Europe, and retired in 1983 as an interior designer after working 25 years as vice president of Merrill Lynch in Manhattan. He was owner and operator of Stubbs and McVey, a gift store in DeLand.
Mr. McVey enjoyed traveling, painting, and gardening.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. McVey is survived by his sister, Joyce M. Swain of Ormond Beach, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Carlyn C. Swain of Port Orange.

DEBARY - Jo-Anne M. Roush, 74, died March 15, 2010. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at Community United Methodist Church, 41 W. Highbanks Road in DeBary. She will be laid to rest in Norwalk, Ohio.
She was born on May 13, 1935, in Sandusky, Ohio, and was a member of Community United Methodist Church in DeBary.

Theodore Luce Scott

HOUSTON - Theodore Luce Scott died March 15th at the age of 91. In his final days, he was cared for by the Houston Hospice nurses and doctors. He was born on Jan. 20, 1919, in Paspebiac, P.Q. Canada. He has lived in Houston since 2004 and had previously lived in Florida, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
He was married to his wife, Jean Smith Scott, for 35 years. They were married in 1975 in Beverly, Mass. He is survived by his brother, Nelson and his wife, Joan, and his sister, Lorraine, who reside in British Columbia, Canada. Ted also has a niece and several nephews in Canada.
Ted was predeceased by his first wife, Winnie, and is survived by children Noreen Nelson of Salem, Mass., and Wendall and his wife, Judy Scott of Chesapeake, Va. He also has numerous grandchildren. In addition, he leaves two stepchildren, Priscilla Dodge and her husband, Brian Yablonski, of Juno Beach, and Judi Dodge of Austin, Texas.
He was a past Worshipful Master of Liberty Lodge A.F. and A.M. in Beverly, and a member of the Scottish Rites Consistory. Ted was also active in the Boy Scouting program.
Ted was in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He participated in the invasion of France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. For years, he worked with Amelio Cuchinelli at Cooch’s Barber Shop.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, March 18, in the chapel of Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood in Houston.

William ‘Bill’ Eurasti Sherman, Esq.

DELAND - William “Bill” Eurasti Sherman, Esq., 82, died peacefully in his sleep March 11, 2010. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, March 19, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Mr. Sherman was an attorney, with more than 50 years of service to his clients and the community. He was born to Dr. William E. and Maryetta Sherman on April 28, 1927, in Tampa. He attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., before joining the Army in 1945.
In the Army, he served as a private first class in the Army Pictorial Service, headquartered in Gorizia, Italy. He was honorably discharged from active service in 1947, and continued in the U.S. Army Reserve, serving in the Signal Corps and later as a JAGC officer, attaining the rank of captain.
Mr. Sherman earned his undergraduate degree in political science in 1950 from the University of Florida, continuing there to earn his law degree. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1953, and joined Landis Graham French P.A., the longest continuing law firm in Volusia County, in 1959. He was an active member of the firm, serving as its president until his death. He served as a member of the Board of Governors and as chairman of the Real Property Probate & Trust Law Section of the Florida Bar; as a member of the Volusia County Charter Study Commission that drafted the Volusia County Charter; and as president of the Florida Lawyers Education Association.
Beyond the law, he enjoyed boating, snorkeling, sailing, fishing and flying, and listening to classical and jazz music with his beloved wife, Vicki. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, becoming an elder in 1961.
Mr. Sherman is survived by his wife, Vicki Lynn Sherman. His children from an earlier marriage, William E. Sherman III and Valerie A. Sherman, preceded him in death.

DELAND - Dr. Willis D. and Betty B. Bidgood honored
The family of Dr. Willis D. and Betty B. Bidgood will honor them at a service and reception at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Willis Bidgood died Oct. 9, 2000, and Betty Bidgood died Aug. 19, 2009, in New Smyrna Beach. They had been married 51 years at the time of Dr. Bidgood’s death.
The Bidgoods were longtime members of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand. Dr. Bidgood, a general surgeon, practiced in DeLand from 1951 to 1975. He was the first surgical specialist in DeLand, and served at various times as chief of the medical staffs at Fish Memorial Hospital and West Volusia Memorial Hospital, both in DeLand. He was a consummate and deeply caring professional.
Betty Bidgood worked faithfully alongside her husband for many years, as his office manager, and as a medical assistant. They shared a common love of family and raised two children together, always encouraging and supporting the children’s various endeavors. Home life and shared family time were especially important to them. They shared a love of the outdoors, particularly the ocean and the beach, and enjoyed gardening. Additionally, Will liked to fish, made cast nets, and played golf. Betty enjoyed knitting, painting, music and cooking.
The Bidgoods are survived by one son, Dean Bidgood of Chapel Hill, N.C., one daughter, Sara Dunn of Pasadena, Calif., and one daughter-in-law, Diane Bidgood. They have four grandchildren, Sara Garrett and her husband, Brian, Lee Bidgood and his wife, Emily, Emily Bray and her husband, Mark, and Grace Bidgood; and three great-grandchildren, Anna Garrett, Maggie Garrett and Ella Bray.

LOUISVILLE, KY. - Audrey Hazel Ticknor Goodan, 90, died March 10, 2010, in Louisville.
Born in Willoughby, Ohio, Mrs. Goodan lived in DeLand 1967-2003.
She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of DeLand, and loved people, especially children. A natural mother, she took care of all she met and touched them with her warmth, humor and generous spirit.
Mrs. Goodan is survived by three children, Edward Goodan, Laura Goodan-Graham and Rita MacWilliam; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother; and friend Gary Jones.

DELAND - Claude E. King Jr., 59, died March 10, 2010, at the West Volusia Hospice Care Center in Orange City. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 12, at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. Mr. King was born in Amissville, Va., on July 6, 1950, and moved to West Volusia in 1960.
He was a third-generation owner of Claude King Painting for more than 30 years, and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in DeLand.
Mr. King was preceded in death in 2007 by his wife, Bevile. He is survived by two sons, Timothy L. of Crawfordville, and Mark A. of Concord, N.C.; two brothers, Chucky of DeLand, and Tommy of Deltona; one sister, Diane Ponder of DeLeon Springs; and six grandchildren.

DELAND - Helen Fell Windhorst, 98, of Woodland Towers, died March 7, 2010, at Woodland Terrace in DeLand. The Rev. Dr. Bruce Hedgepeth will officiate at a memorial service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, 724 N. Woodland Blvd.
Mrs. Windhorst was born on her family’s farm in Coldwater, Ohio, and moved to DeLand with her parents and sister in 1927. She graduated in 1929 from DeLand High School, and in 1931 from Stetson University. She worked for many years at the Putnam Hotel in DeLand.
She married Theodore “Ted” Windhorst in 1938.
Mrs. Windhorst enjoyed traveling, and after her retirement, she visited Europe numerous times, and traveled to Alaska three times. She had a strong faith, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of DeLand for more than 60 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted. She is survived by one son, Jon Windhorst and his wife, Patti, of Merritt Island; three grandchildren, Sara Windhorst of Winter Springs, Bill Windhorst of Cape Canaveral, and Robert Martin and his wife, Trena, of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Ted and Elizabeth.

DELAND - Althea Louise Griffin, 82, died March 3, 2010.
Born in Milbridge, Maine, Mrs. Griffin and her late husband, Alden Griffin, moved to DeLand 26 years ago from New England. While living in Connecticut, she was a supervisor in several nursing-home facilities. However, the majority of her life was devoted to her husband and eight children. Being a wife and mother was her greatest joy.
Although unable to attend in recent years, she was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeLand.
Mrs. Griffin was also preceded in death by one son, Timothy Griffin. She is survived by three daughters, Priscilla Paul and her husband, Jerry, of Memphis, Tenn., Kathleen Baldwin and her husband, Jerry, of Port Orange, and Bonita Cooper and her husband, Bob, of Henderson, Nev.; four sons, Dennis Griffin and his wife, Becky, and David Griffin, all of New London, Conn., Robert Griffin and his wife, Jan, of Sophia, N.C., and Michael Griffin of DeLand; three sisters, Mary Peterson of DeLand, Madelyn Mitchell of Gorham, Maine, and Phyllis Butler of Suncook, N.H.; one sister-in-law, Roberta Andrews of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Heyen was a sales representative for Express Printing in DeLand. Born in Cleveland, he moved to Deltona in 1988 from New York.
He was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Orange City, where he was a past president and a member of the church council. He was a past president and member of the Kiwanis Club of Deltona, was an Eagle Scout and volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, and was the first president of the Southwest Volusia Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Heyen is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joann C.; two daughters, Kimberly Eifrid and her husband, Tom, and Christi Denney; his mother, Anabel Heyen; one brother, Joseph; two sisters, Jane Munro and Jean Vogel; and four grandchildren, Megan Eifrid, Mia Eifrid, Jessica Denney and Nichole Denney.

Joseph Anthony ‘Joe’ Scarfato

LAKE MACK - Joseph Anthony “Joe” Scarfato, 59, died Feb. 27, 2010, at Orlando Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 12, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 359 W. New York Ave. in DeLand.
Mr. Scarfato was a carpenter. Born Jan. 15, 1951, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he grew up in New Jersey.
He graduated in 1969 from Northern Highlands Regional High School in New Jersey.
Mr. Scarfato and his future wife, Elaine, met on Cape Cod in 1972, and they married in Marion, Mass., in 1974.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, the ocean, fishing, watching football and baseball, playing chess, and his granddaughter, Alexandria.
Mr. Scarfato was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Joseph Scarfato. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Elaine; two sons, Christopher and Jason; his mother, Loretta Scarfato Ashworth; two brothers, Tom and Tony and his wife, Linda; one sister, Lori; his granddaughter, Alexandria Lynn; one nephew, A.J. Scarfato and his two children, Joey and Kaley; and a circle of friends.
Mrs. Scarfato wishes to thank the Lake County emergency crews, the doctors and staff in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit at ORMC, and her family and friends for their prayers, love and support during this difficult time.

Sgt. 1st Class Arthur Lee Kessinger Jr.

PONCHATOULA, LA. - Sgt. 1st Class Arthur Lee Kessinger Jr., 32, a native of Jonesboro, Ga., died unexpectedly Feb. 24, 2010, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. A funeral service was held Feb. 27 at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home in Hammond, La. Interment followed at Rose Memorial Mausoleum, with full military honors.
Sgt. 1st Class Kessinger was a 1995 graduate of Ponchatoula High School, and was active in the National Guard for 13 years, having served in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ruby and Buzz Wall, and Cecelia and Clark Kessinger. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie DiPalma Kessinger; his parents, Arthur Lee Sr. and Sandra Kessinger of Deltona; two sisters, Selena Russo and her husband, Stephen, and Kristina Maxey and her husband, Aaron; and nieces and nephew Madison Maxey, Makenzie Maxey and A.J. Maxey. He is also survived by his girlfriend, Stacey Groves.

Born on Aug. 30, 1937, Mr. Roberts moved to this area 47 years ago from his birthplace of Cincinnati.
He was a member of the Christian Church at DeLeon Springs, and enjoyed fishing, and watching NASCAR.
Mr. Roberts served honorably in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan C. Roberts; one son, Rob Roberts of Mitchellville, Md.; one daughter, Vicki Marpole and her husband, Tom, of DeLeon Springs; two brothers, Richard Roberts of DeLeon Springs, and Ronald Roberts of Baltimore; and two grandchildren, Alex Marpole and Ryan Marpole.

OCALA - Nicholas A. Chillemi Sr., 89, died Feb. 20, 2010.
Born in New York City, Mr. Chillemi was the head golf professional at DeLand Country Club.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years.
Mr. Chillemi is survived by his four children, three siblings, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold F. Cohen

WELAKA - Harold F. Cohen, 79, died Feb. 24, 2010, at his home. A graveside service was held Feb. 27 at the Harris Cemetery in Seville.
Mr. Cohen retired as a fern grower, and also worked as a commercial fisherman, carpenter, prison guard, and cattleman. Born in Seville, he was a lifetime resident of North Central Florida.
He served in the U.S. Army.
