Tech repair shop opens in north DeLand

It feels like the end of the world. You sat on your $600 or $800 smartphone and cracked the screen. Or worse, dropped it into a puddle of water. The horror! And now you’re staring at shelling out hundreds of dollars to buy a replacement.

But fear not, technology user. Now there’s a shop on the north side of DeLand where you can take your cellphone, computer, tablet, game console or any other electronic device and get cracked screens, water damage, software issues, camera issues, and almost any other problem repaired for much less than the cost of replacing the device.

The appropriately named uBreakiFix is now open across from the Walmart Supercenter. Zachary and Christen McCamie — he’s a firefighter with the City of Orlando; she’s a real estate broker — are the franchisee owners of the new store.

The couple were looking for a business to start, Zach McCamie told The Beacon. They had gone to an Apopka uBreakiFix store to get his phone repaired, and were amazed at how busy the store was and impressed with the customer service they received.

So they did some research and ultimately decided to get their own uBreakiFix stores. The company told them DeLand and Deltona — the closest cities to where they live — were available, so they jumped at the opportunity.

The DeLand store opened March 29 and currently has three employees, McCamie said; the Deltona store, which will be in the Deltona Village shopping center near Epic Theatres, is scheduled to open this fall.

McCamie said repairs are done with original manufacturers’ equipment, with prices depending on the specific device being repaired. For instance, a new iPhone screen can cost $89.99 to $149.99, depending on the model.

“That’s very, very, very much less” than buying a replacement, McCamie said. “It’s $120 to replace a screen on a phone that costs eight or nine hundred dollars.”

The DeLand store — one of 370 across the U.S. and in Canada — is the first uBreakiFix in West Volusia, although there are sister stores in Ormond Beach, Port Orange and Palm Coast.

A similar business — AAC Computers — has been in the West Volusia Regional Shopping Center on DeLand’s south side for several years.

The DeLand uBreakiFix store is at 1702 N. Woodland Blvd., Suite 112. Hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Walk-ins always are welcome, or you can call 386-279-0559.
